Dental discount plans, also known as "referral" or "reduced fee" plans, are not considered dental insurance plans. Discount dental plans are affordable to join and are the most widely available dental programs for individuals and families. While they work differently than dental insurance plans, the advantage is that dental plans provide consumers with real and substantial savings on many dental procedures.

Dentists who participate in discount plans have agreed to offer reduced fees to plan members for the dental services they perform. To receive the discount, plan members simply show their card during their visit to the dental office.
