List of Dentist Schools

The schools on this list of dentist schools are known to develop socially conscious, civic-minded dental professionals who work with community leaders and other health professionals to promote oral health care. Dentistry has a distinguished history of leadership in improving world health. In addition to educating patients and the general public on oral health and disease prevention, dentists have taken on leadership roles in implementing such community-based preventive programs as water fluoridation, sealant and oral cancer screening programs.

This list contains dental schools in both the United States and Canada. Graduates receive either a DDS or DMD degree. Most schools have four year dental programs (although there may be one or two which have three year programs). Many dental school graduates often decide to spend an additional year in a post-doctoral program. These programs are generally in the form of a General Practice Residency (GPR) or an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program. While optional, these programs help recent graduates build confidence and better proficiency in dental procedures.

Practically every school on this list uses the Associated American Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS). This organization serves as an information-clearing house, helping to centralize the application process for both applicants and schools through the use of a single application form. While the AADSAS acts as a central hub, any questions which you may have regarding a dental school's admission criteria and/or the application process should be directed to that particular school.

Quality of Education

The overall quality of education provided by accredited dental schools is high. While there are publications which provide dental school ranking information, this information can be misleading and is therefore, unreliable. One of the best measurements of a schools academic performance is through its accreditation status. The decision where to apply to a dental school is a very personal decision. That decision depends on many factors; career goals, personal interests, family circumstances and financial considerations.
